Thomas Kent attended schools in Iowa City and earned a BS and MD from the University of Iowa. He served at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (1964-1966) before returning to the University of Iowa as a professor of pathology, specializing in gastrointestinal diseases and medical education. His interest in birds, bird observation and photographing birds dates back to 1942.
